Dennis Yarmouth 2, Martha's Vineyard 1 (February 18, 2016)
Martha's Vineyard finished their 2016 season with a solid effort that showed the growth the team has made over their 20 game season. Despite the emotions that consumed the team with the Senior Day festivities that honored the three departing Vineyarders, the home team battled to the end before dropping a 2-1 decision to the strong team from DY.
Before the game Belle Dinning, Jackie Hegarty, and Meg Burke were recognized for their contributions to the Martha's Vineyard program over the last four seasons. All three followed up the ceremony with memorable games that they can be proud of. Dinning played an inspired game as the first line center, Hegarty played her usual stellar came in between the pipes, and Burke was aggressive at left wing and even earned an assist on the Vineyard goal in the third period.
The afternoon of hockey summed up the entire team's improvement. The last several games, despite not finding the win column, showed how much progress each player has made. And as a team the last week, the Vineyarders battled strong teams from Plymouth, Marshfield, and DY late into games.
Thursday's game against the Dolphins, a team the Vineyard lost to 6-1 earlier in the season, went down to the final buzzer. A second period goal from the visitors put the home team in a 1-0 hole, and then a goal half way through the final period seemingly put things out of reach. However, Martha's Vineyard pulled Hegarty with just under two minutes left, and Genny Kent found the top right corner with 1:32 left in the game. While a late flurry couldn't tie the game it did show the resiliency the Vineyard displayed much of the last part of the season, and it was a fitting conclusion for the team and the three departing seniors.

Bourne, Mashpee, Wareham, ORR 1 Martha's Vineyard 0 (February 10, 2016)
The Vineyarders played a strong game, but they could not find the back of the net, as they dropped a 1-0 decision to their league rivals from the Bourne area. A goal from the visitors 44 seconds into the final period broke a scoreless deadlock, and Martha's Vineyard just could not answer in the loss. Jackie Hegarty played a strong game in net, as the senior continues to keep her team in games. Senior co captain Belle Dinning had a quality game up front, but Belle and her teammates just couldn't break through.
Martha's Vineyard travels to Plymouth for their final road game of the season before returning home for a President's Day encounter with Marshfield and their senior game Thursday against DY.

Franklin 5, Martha's Vineyard 1 (February 6, 2016)
The Vineyarders played well for a period and a half, but the Panthers proved too much for the home team. A scoreless game with 7 minutes left in the middle period quickly denigrated into a 3-0 affair before the period would end. A bad angle goal from Meghan Sonia cut the Frankin lead to 3-1, but Franklin scored two more before the game ended.
While Franklin came into the contest the heavy favorite, Martha's Vineyard played strong defense for much of the opening 20 minutes. However, the game did not end with the same intensity from the home team. Back to the drawing board as the team gets set to host league rival BMW on Wednesday at the Arena.

Martha's Vineyard 1, Nauset/Cape Tech/Monomoy 1 (February 3, 2016)
The Vineyard spotted the home team a 1-0 lead before adding the equalizer late in the first period, and the two teams played back and forth scoreless hockey the rest of the way for a 1-1 tie in Orleans.
With her team behind 1-0, senior assistant captain Meg Burke scored her first goal of the season late in the opening period. The wrist shot from the left circle was roofed over the shoulder of the Nauset goalie and rang of the crossbar and in. Megan Sonia earned the assist, and the visitors seized the momentum heading into the intermission.
Despite some glorious opportunities at both ends, neither team could find the back of the net. Jackie Hegarty was strong in the Martha's Vineyard net, and Kylie Hatt and Hailey Meader worked with Lacey Dinning and Sally Caron to solidify the Vineyard defensive end. With the tie the Vineyarder's record stands at 4-7-3 on the year (3-5-1 in the SEMGHL).

Brookline/Newton South 2, Martha's Vineyard 1 (January 30, 2016)
Martha's Vineyard proved how much they have improved since the first game of the season, but a late goal from the visitors spelled defeat for the Vineyarders at MV Arena on Saturday night.
Kylie Hatt scored less then five minutes into the contest to pace the Vineyard to a 1-0 lead, and that was the score as the two teams headed to the first period intermission. In the season opener, the Vineyard trailed Brookline 1-0 after the first period, and they were outshot 12-2.
Brookline was able to tie it up in the second, and with 2:30 left in the game, a deflected puck found its way to the back of the net, and Martha's Vineyard found themselves behind for the first time. A last second flurry couldn't beat the Brookline net minder, but it only further highlighted the improvement and resiliency the home team showed to the fans in attendance.

Scituate 0 vs Martha’s Vineyard 0 (Scituate Wins in OT)

Martha's Vineyard 2, Sandwich 2 (January 13, 2016)
Martha's Vineyard battled back from two one goal deficits and they earned the tie in their game at Gallo Arena. Playing undoubtedly their best three period game of the season, the Vineyarders tied the game at 1-1 late in the second, only to see Sandwich score to regain the lead just over a minute later. Martha's Vineyard then came out in the final frame with grit and determination and with 9:17 left in the contest the Vineyard tied the game 2-2.
Junior goaltender Julia Bettencourt was strong in net, especially early in the contest when the Blue Knights controlled the play. The only blemish on the scoreboard came courtesy of a point shot that found its way through a maze of bodies in front of Bettencourt with just 43 seconds left in the opening period.
Martha's Vineyard responded with even better play in the second, and senior captain Belle Dinning beat Sandwich star goalie Delanie Corcoran to notch her fifth goal of the season with 3:20 left to tie the game. While the Blue Knights came right back to take the one-goal lead, Martha's Vineyard entered the intermission knowing they could play with their perennial non league rivals.
A few glorious early scoring opportunities that were missed did not deter the visitors, and freshman Meghan Sonia roofed a backhander past Corcoran to tie things at 2-2. The final minutes saw the Vineyard play well in their own zone, and control the play in the Sandwich end for much of the time. Neither team found the back of the net, and the game ended in a tie, but Martha's Vineyard left knowing that they could play with a quality opponent.

Before the Sandwich game at Gallo Arena, both teams took a moment to honor the injured women's professional hockey player, Denna Laing (#14). Laing's determination and inspirational messages in the face of her "new challenge" has united the hockey community.
Coach Steve Noll and the Sandwich team invited Martha's Vineyard to help send a message back to Denna. The Vineyard was obviously excited to be a part of a movement that is bringing attention to Denna's message.
Here is Denna's message from her Facebook page:
For a long time I have been looking for a new challenge. Even though I was not expecting it be this, here we go. Lets start from the beginning, the best day of my life. I woke up on a beautiful 31st of December and got my dunks because #required. I drove to the rink and walked in with the pack, my pod, and my gold pumps. When we got in there, there were individual name plates and merchandise from the NHL. All I could think about was it was like Christmas. We immediately all had to try everything on. Here are some of the candids of the gals. Then had to sit around for about an hour and then try getting on and off the bus with our skates! We got a police escort and we thought we could find TB12 because we pulled up right into the player tunnels. We got out into some small locker rooms. Bobby gave us his pre game speech and we walked on and saw the field for the first time. I had debated back and forth whether or not to bring my phone and man am I glad I brought it. It was the most beautiful hockey rink I've ever seen. After those first few minutes of skating around tragedy struck. You know the rest.... but I dont want you to feel bad for me. This is a moment to remember for Women's Hockey. We made history that day and I would never take those moments back.
Thank you for the moments.

Pembroke 7, Martha's Vineyard (V) 1
The varsity struggled to keep up with the powerhouse group from Pembroke. Three Titan goals in the first seven minutes sealed the Vineyard fate. The team hung in throughout, and they were rewarded with a goal late in the second period. Paige Araujo and Meg Burke earned helpers on Meghan Sonia's fourth goal of the season. Martha's Vineyard hits the road Wednesday for a nonleague matchup with Sandwich High School at Gallo Arena.

Martha's Vineyard 2, Bishop Stang 1 (January 6, 2016)
Martha's Vineyard had the unique task of taking on a team they just recently defeated, but the Vineyarders did not fall into a trap game mentality, and took care of business with a 2-1 road win against the Spartans on Wednesday evening. Back to back games are a rarity in high school sports, but the Vineyard maintained their focus by opening up an early 2-0 lead, outshooting their league rivals 31-9, and holding on for the road victory to up their record to 3-4 (3-3 in the SEMGHL Southeast division).
Meghan Sonia put Martha's Vineyard on the board early in the opening period. The goal was the freshman's third in the last two games, and it continued the Vineyard momentum that carried over from the dominant third period the Vineyard played at home on Saturday against Stang. Kylie Hatt's unassisted tally less then two minutes after the Sonia goal gave the visitors a two goal lead, and it looked like the Vineyard would roll. Stang netminder Victoria Poland stood tall from that point on, though, and the Vineyard was unable to fiind the back of the net again despite dominant zone time and a plethora of glorious scoring opportunities. A Stang goal late in the second broke any thoughts of a Vineyard shutout, but the Vineyard was never truly threatened again as they hung on to the 2-1 win.
Things get much tougher for the Vineyarders when they welcome Pembroke High School to the island for a Saturday league tilt. The Titans are one of the dominant Division 2 teams in the state, and Martha's Vineyard will see a different caliber of play on their home ice.

Martha's Vineyard 5, Bishop Stang 1 (January 2, 2016)
The Vineyard rung in the new year with a 5-1 home win in their first contest of 2016. Senior Belle Dinning lit the lamp in the first period, and freshman Meghan Sonia notched her first varsity tally to pace the Vineyarders to a 2-0 lead. After Sara Cruise cut the Stang deficit in half, the game changed when the Vineyard killed a 5-on-3 Stang power late in the second period. After the penalty kill, Dinning jumped out of the box, and beat Stang goalie Victoria Poland short sider to give the home team a 3-1 advantage heading into the second period intermission.
Martha's Vineyard locked it down in the defensive zone in the third, limiting the Spartans to three third period shots. On the other end, Sonia scored her second goal of the night, and Kylie Hatt finished the scoring with her third goal of the season.
With the win, Martha's Vineyard improves to 2-4 on the year, and 2-3 in the SEMGHL Southeast division. The Vineyarders have an interesting turnaround when they head back to school this week, as the schedule has them facing off with the Spartans again, this time at Hetland Arena on Wednesday.

Plymouth North/South 5, Martha's Vineyard 0 (December 28, 2015)
The home team fell behind early, but competed hard throughout their encounter with the combined team from Plymouth. A bad bounce to the side of Jackie Hegarty gave Plymouth a 1-0 lead less then five minutes into the contest, and then a wonderful individual effort paced the visitors to a 2-0 lead less then a minute later. The Vineyarders hung tough for the remainder of the opening frame, but an inopportune line change in the last minute allowed Plymouth a three goal cushion heading into the locker room.
Martha's Vineyard settled down against the strong Plymouth team the rest of the way, only surrendering one goal in each of the last two periods. Hard battles along the boards, strong play from the Vineyard five person units in the defensive zone, and better transition marked most of the last 30 minutes of play. While Plymouth, who lost in last year's state quarterfinal game, was never nervous about the victory, the team left knowing the Vineyard played hard and will be a team to reckon with as the season progresses.
Martha's Vineyard has a few days of practice to finish up the school vacation week as they prepare for a home tilt with league and Eastern Athletic League rival Bishop Stang. The Spartans come to Martha's Vineyard Arena on Saturday at 5pm.

Dennis-Yarmouth 6, Martha's Vineyard 1 (December 23, 2015)
The visitors played their best period of the season, a scoreless first against the Dolphins, before wearing down and suffering a 6-1 loss on Wednesday in both team's last game before the break.
Julia Bettencourt pitched a shutout over the first 15 minutes, and the Vineyard played well in all three zones against the 3-0-1 hosts. Four second period goals, though, put any thoughts of an upset to rest. Belle Dinning notched her second goal of the young season early in the third, but that was all the offense the Vineyarders would be able to muster.
Martha's Vineyard enters the Holiday break 1-3 on the season, and they get ready for their toughest challenge of the young season Monday when they play host to Plymouth North/South at the Arena.

Martha's Vineyard 3, Nauset 2 (December 19, 2015)
Martha's Vineyard jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period, saw Nauset battle back to tie things at 2-2 early in the third, and then scored the game winner less than a minute later to capture a dramatic 3-2 win.
Natalija Lakis got the Vineyard on the board early in the first when she knocked home a loose puck in the slot on the power play. The goal was the junior's first varsity tally, and it got the Vineyard rolling. After MV drew another penalty, Kylie Hatt sent a long wrist shot through a maze of players to pace the home team to a 2-0 lead. Nauset star Blue Fancy went end to end as the first period clock wound down to cut the Vineyard lead in half.
After a scoreless middle stanza the drama began to unfold right in the early moments of the third period. A scramble in front of senior Jackie Hegarty eventually led to Nauset's tieing goal, and it looked like all the momentum would be on the visitors side. But the line of Meghan Sonia, Meg Burke, and Julia Levesque won the ensuing face-off and got the puck deep into Nauset's end. Sonia and Burke pressured behind the net, and Burke came away with the puck. With her head up behind the goal line, she found Levesque in front, and the junior center made not mistake, beating the Nauset goalie and giving the home team a 3-2 lead.
Solid defense the rest of the way, especially from Hatt and freshmen Hailey Meader and Sally Caron, sealed the victory. The Vineyarders saw their record improve to 1-2 (overall) and 1-1 (SEMGHL). The team travels to Dennis-Yarmouth on Wednesday for their final game before the Christmas break.

BMW/ORR 5, Martha's Vineyard 2 (December 16, 2016)
Martha's Vineyard dropped their second in a row to start the 2015-2016 season Wednesday. Bourne scored three goals in a four minute stretch in the middle period to break open a 1-1 game, and hand the Vineyard their first league loss of the season.
After falling behind 1-0 in the opening period, Saige Araujo notched her first varsity goal half way through the period to tie things at 1-1. The home team rallied in the second, though, and dominated the visitors with zone time and shots on goal. Junior net minder Julia Bettencourt had a stellar period despite allowing the three goals, and Martha's Vineyard tried to stay in striking distance for a third period rally.
Senior captain Belle Dinning finished a feed from Genny Kent early in the third, and it looked like Martha's Vineyard could mount a comeback, but Bourne found the back of the net once again half way through the final stanza to cap the victory.
Martha's Vineyard will regroup and get ready for their home opener against league rival Nauset on Saturday at 5pm.
