Barnstable 5, Martha's Vineyard 2 (January 20, 2018)
When teams struggle to find wins, and sometimes find themselves overwhelmed early in the season by more experienced opponents, it would be easy to mail it in and not stay committed to the goal of improving as an individual and a team. The Vineyard proved on Saturday that they are going to be a team that will stick with the program, commit to themselves and each other, and improve every game throughout the second half of the 2018 campaign.
A spirited effort from the entire team against an undefeated Division 1 power showed the home fans that this year's varsity will do their best to compete over the second half of the season. Two goals from junior Meghan Sonia, terrific goaltending from sophomore Amelia Simmons, and effort from all 17 players highlighted a game that went a long way to erase the bitter taste of an early season 12-1 loss to the same Red Raiders team.
Sonia got the Vineyarders on the board first early in the opening period, and despite a goal from the visitors, a 1-1 draw after one period was a dramatic difference from a 6-0 hole the Vineyard found themselves in back in December.
Two second period goals from Barnstable and a early third period goal put the Vineyard in a 4-1 hole, but Sonia responded with her second with assists credited to Sally Caron and Ruby Reimann. A fifth Barnstable goal cemented the victory for the undefeated Red Raiders, but Martha's Vineyard played hard to the end and sent a message to their opponents that the young Vineyarders will be an improved unit throughout the second half of the season.
